Bergbeklimmen met een armprothese - Jaco van Gass

De 25-jarige Zuid-Afrikaan Jaco van Gass verloor een arm in Afghanistan. Toch wilde hij zijn droom om de Mount Everest te beklimmen niet opgeven. Daarom maakte hij van de hand van zijn prothese een 'ijshaak'. Daarmee kan hij klimmen zodat hij zijn 'eigen' hand vrij houdt. De prothese heeft tevens een 'kacheltje' op batterijen, zodat de arm binnenin lekker warm blijft. 

(25-year-old South African Jaco van Gass lost an arm in Afghanistan, but rather than abandon his quest to climb Mount Everest, he turned his prosthetic hand into an advantage. Van Gass designed an ice pick prosthetic that will allow him to both use a climbing aid and keep his remaining hand free while ascending the steep faces of the world's tallest mountain. The welded-and-bolted carbon fiber bionic arm also has a battery-powered heating element. ("[Keeping] the arm inside warm and toasty," he says). Van Gass will be accompanied by five other wounded veterans on the climb and, if they're anything like him, Everest doesn't stand a chance.)
